Ludell Current Obituary

Ludell Current was born September 1, 1934 in Tulip, Arkansas, the first of seven children born to the late Woodie and Jamie Allen. She departed this life on January 22, 2022 at the age of 87. Ludell was united in marriage to the late Bobby Frank Current on May 29, 1955.  Five children were born to this union.  She was a devoted wife for 46 years and a loving mother.

She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and joined Toones Chapel AME church in Tulip, Arkansas.  She later moved her membership to First Baptist Church of Woodson where she remained a very faithful, dedicated, and active member until her health began to fail.  She was a Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Youth Department teacher, and Vacation Bible School Director.  For many years, she held the position of church clerk, was a member of the Mission Department, Benevolence Committee, sang in the choir and co-chaired the Building Fund Committee.

Ludell’s love for children led her to a career in education. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Philander Smith College - May 19, 1966 and her Master’s Degree in Education from University of Arkansas - May 17, 1975.  She was a teacher at J. C. Cook, Wakefield, and Fuller elementary schools in the Pulaski County Special School District for 34 years before she retired in June, 2000. She believed, once a teacher, always a teacher and served as a teacher for the homework assistance program sponsored by First Baptist Church.

Ludell was one of the 13 charter members of the Gamma Nu Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc, a national teacher’s sorority chartered in Little Rock on June 8, 1968.  She held several offices in these 53+ years and attended many regional and national conferences.  She was also an active member of NEA – National Education Association, AEA – Arkansas Education Association, and ARTA – Arkansas Retired Teachers Association.

Ludell touched many lives as an educator, community member, family matriarch and follower of Christ.  Her beauty, strength, generosity and loving spirit will be remembered by all whose path she has crossed.  She was always very active in the Woodson community serving in various roles with the Woodson Community Action Council, volunteering for community activities, and serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the Community Neighborhood Outreach Worship (CNOW) Committee.

She was preceded in death by two brothers John Henry Jones, Sr. and Woodie Allen, Jr., three sisters, Carrie Sue Lewis, Freddie Piggee, and Pauline Owens, and two grandchildren, Kera Dunlap and Davina Current.
